Commissioning Your Custom Pet Portrait

Commissioning a portrait should feel exciting, not intimidating. I’ve created a simple, thoughtful process to make sure you feel involved every step of the way—and that the finished portrait is something you’ll treasure forever.

1. Share Their Story

It starts with your favorite photos—images that truly capture your pet’s spirit. We’ll also talk about their personality, quirks, and what you love most about them, so I can bring more than just their likeness to life.

2. I Begin the Painting

Using your photos as reference, I’ll create a hand-painted portrait with careful attention to detail. You’ll receive progress updates along the way, including sketches or in-process photos, so you can watch your portrait take shape.

3. Final Approval & Delivery

Once the painting is complete, I’ll send images of the finished portrait for your approval. Only when you’re fully delighted will it leave my studio—carefully packaged and shipped to you, ready to display and enjoy for generations.

Custom Sizes & Framing Options Available

If you have something special in mind—an heirloom size, a paired portrait of multiple pets, or framing guidance—just ask. I’m happy to work with you to create something truly one-of-a-kind.

Ready to begin?

I use professional quality acrylic paint on museum quality cotton canvas offered in a gallery wrapped format. I work from photos supplied by you or taken by me if you are in the New Orleans area. A 50% deposit is required and payment of the balance through Venmo, Zelle, or Paypal is due upon completion. I ship via FedEx using a professional fine art packer. Shipping cost will be determined at the time of shipping. Upon approval of the composition based on my sketch, I’ll email you photos so you can monitor the painting’s progress. Turnaround time can be as fast as two weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the right photo?
Choose a photo that captures your pet’s true personality. Clear, well-lit images with expressive eyes work best. Need help deciding? I’m happy to assist.

How long does it take to complete a portrait?
Portraits are painted by hand, with great care. Timing depends on size and my current commission list. I’ll provide an estimate before we begin.

Can you paint multiple pets in one portrait?
Absolutely. Let me know how you envision it, and we’ll work together to plan the composition.

What if I don’t love the portrait?
This is a collaboration, and you’ll be involved throughout the process. I won’t ship a painting unless you’re thrilled with it.

Do you offer framing?
I can provide framing recommendations if you’d like to complete the piece before hanging. Just ask!

—Sarah K., Blue Bell, PA

“I commissioned this portrait as a gift for my brother and his family. I specifically wanted it as a complimentary portrait to one our mother had done, some 50 years ago, of the first Golden Retriever in our family and which hangs in my brother’s home. Chico is a gentle giant of a Golden. When I first saw this painting, I was amazed at how perfectly his personality is captured in a portrait which does not show an open gaze. Again, as I find repeatedly with much of Julie’s work, it is so much more than just a portrait, it is a piece of art even those unfamiliar with the subject can appreciate.”
—Esther L., Dubai (UAE)

“For years I have been wanting to get the girls’ portraits done and have never “felt” anyone’s work enough to want to get it done. That is until I saw your work. You capture the essence of people and animals in such a unique way. I am not a person to spend money on these type of things but had no problem spending on these works of art! We will cherish these forever and want to again thank you for making Daisy and Toots come alive on canvas!”
—Jeanie H., Philadelphia, PA
